The Best Green Beauty Brands at Target

by | Jan 24, 2018 | Green Beauty

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t love Target! They offer aesthetically pleasing merchandise and it’s incredibly convenient to get what you need at your local Target store. Not to mention, Target is bringing in more and more eco-friendly brands.  As green beauty continues to grow, it’s important to know which brands you can trust, and which brands are green-washers.

After some research and figuring out who owns who, and who claims they use clean ingredients but don’t, this list contains the best green beauty to shop for. At the bottom of this post I list “supposed natural” brands at Target I do not purchase and why.

CAPTAIN BLANKENSHIP was born out of Jana Blankenship’s desire to create organic beauty products that have a direct link with nature after growing up spending every summer in Sorrento, Maine. Captain Blankenship is a small, women-run company in the Hudson River Valley that makes products that are luxurious and honest.

They formulate their products with only organic and wild-harvested ingredients that are domestically grown when possible. They also use recyclable and reusable glass packaging, making a positive environmental impact. The products are never tested on animals, only on themselves and their friends.

DR. BRONNERS only uses the purest organic and fair trade ingredients. Most products are vegan and certified to the same organic standards as food. Dr Bronner’s is committed to regenerative organic farming projects, soil enrichment and tree-planting programs, 100% post-consumer recycled packaging, and aggressive waste and water-use reduction.

Dr. Bronner’s has also always been an activist company. It is their mission to fight for and financially support causes they believe in: regenerative agriculture, fair trade, animal advocacy, industrial hemp and drug policy reform, and living wages among others. They call themselves the “fighting soap company!”

FIG + YARROW is an artisan line of small batch, hand crafted organic health and vanity products founded and made by Brandy Monique. At Fig + Yarrow, they believe in sourcing responsibly harvested ingredients, and choose them based on purity, nutrients, and the highest amount of skin-improving constituents. Their belief is that, by choosing natural beauty, consumers can collectively influence how the land, people, and other creatures at the most basic level of product chains are treated.

GABRIEL COSMETICS  originated as a botanical skincare company drawing on Gabriel De Santino’s personal influences and childhood experiences of homeopathic skincare and cosmetics. Gabriel’s makeup and skincare brands solved a problem within the marketplace by providing women affordable and results driven skincare and makeup. These products are vegan, gluten-free, cruelty free and natural.

The cosmetics line uses eco-friendly packaging – PELASPAN™ BIO packaging peanuts are made from 100% biodegradable material. Vegetable starch. PELASPAN™ BIO is 100%  biodegradable without any risk of ground water contamination.

MEOW MEOW TWEET is a small-batch skin care company that creates vegan products with pure, all natural and organic ingredients.

All products are made with organic, unrefined plant oils and butters, steam-distilled and cold-pressed essential oils and organic and wild-crafted botanicals. Meow Meow Tweet is Leaping Bunny cruelty-free certified. They are committed to using the least amount of plastic packaging. All goods are either hand wrapped in PCW paper or housed in glass containers.

PLANT APOTHECARY creates unisex, all-botanical and USDA organic beauty products that are proudly USA made. Their mission is to combine simple, design-forward packaging with healthy ingredients, environmental friendliness and social responsibility. All formulas are a new twists on effective, time-honored traditional skincare and health remedies from all over the world, and they all follow the principles of classical aromatherapy and herbalism to offer some of the best nature-based apothecary products.

They are based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and PLANT products are made with the help of adults with mental and physical disabilities – who are employed by BKYLN UNLTD, a non-profit organization whose mission is to give them work training and opportunities.

THE SEAWEED BATH CO. Since 2010, The Seaweed Bath Co. has been devoted to transforming the skin and hair care ritual by providing nutrient-rich, performance-optimized personal care formulas that offer visible results, as well a unique ocean-inspired sensory experience that instills a sense of well-being. They care deeply about the delicate environment we live in, and infuse all of their products with sustainably sourced, nutrient rich ingredients from the sea.

S.W. BASICS has made a commitment to only use truly natural ingredients that are certified organic, fair trade, or sourced from family farms. They also use fewer ingredients to create gentler skincare. S.W Basics is a small team of people just like you!

WELL PEOPLE founded by an elite makeup artist, cosmetic dermatologist and treehugging entrepreneur, created a line of minimalist makeup with state of the art formulas that do not contian harmful artificial chemicals. The products are handcrafted in small batches in the USA, and tested in the W3LL PEOPLE studio by the green beauty pro’s, not on animals. W3LL People takes a modern approach to beauty that is built on simplicity, authenticity and performance.

ZUZU LUXE came into play in 2001 when Gabriel De Santino’s created another brand – a complete line of makeup that was also vegan, gluten-free, cruelty free and natural, but also offered bright, bold colors on a luxury end.

Hain Celestial owns ALBA BOTANICA, JASON, AVALON ORGANICS, and although Hain Celestial is a company that believes in better, healthier products, these brands contain way too many questionable ingredients even though they claim to be clean, natural, and organic. For example, JASON contains ingredients such as Oxybenzone, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate) among others that rate very high hazard across many databases.

Unilever owns SHEA MOISTURE, SCHMIDTS DEODORANT, and LOVE BEAUTY & PLANET. Unilever also owns Dove, Axe, Sunsilk, Tresemme, and many more brands that have the complete opposite morals and values that these brands supposedly stand by. Unilever also claims to be 100% cruelty-free but in a recent statement they state otherwise.

The Clorox Company owns BURT’S BEES.

Colgate Palmolive owns TOM’S OF MAINE.

PIXI BEAUTY, RAW SUGAR LIVING, and PHYSICIANS FORMULA sell themselves as healthy cosmetic companies but contain harsh ingredients. These are what I would consider “green-washers.” For example, many products from PHYSICIANS FORMULA contain parabens, talc, and many other hazardous ingredients.

I prefer to support independent brands that stay true to themselves, don’t sell out to the big guys, and find their own successes while not compromising their ingredients and values. 🙂

Just a friendly reminder, please recycle your empties.
