It’s Winter here in Wisconsin, which only means my scalp is getting drier, itchier, and flakier! These are my favorite affordable shampoo & conditioner duo’s that are formulated to help the scalp. Being someone who battles dandruff year round, I can’t use anything else but a formula dedicated to combat dry scalp.
These two duos are green, cruelty-free and use powerful clean ingredients to get results. Popular anti-dandruff shampoos and conditioners to avoid are Head & Shoulders, Selsun Blue and Nizoral. These contain harsh chemicals including sulfates, parabens, zinc pyriothione, and the unknown “fragrance” ingredient.
Before we jump more into the natural shampoos & conditioners I use, let’s talk about the benefits of coconut oil and why you should add it to your hair regiment if you have dry scalp –
SECRET WEAPON: COCONUT OIL
Maple Holistics original and #1 best seller, the Sage shampoo is dermatologist recommended. It’s formula is designed to target the cause of dandruff and stop it before it starts. Bonus, it’s color safe!
Sage: Safely formulated and the spearhead of the formula, Sage is a natural astringent and plays a vital role in reducing dermatitis. It helps reduce dandruff and prevents clogged hair follicles.
Rosemary ct. Verbenone: Rosemary ct. Verbenone contains less camphor and is safer to use in topical applications. Rich in verbenone, this ingredient can stimulate renewal of the hair follicles, while promoting improved circulation.
Spikenard: This exotic aromatic herb addition works to restore pigmentation and contains exclusive natural properties to combat dandruff.
Tea Tree: Tea tree has been used as the go-to dandruff cure for ages. It contains over 98 all-natural compounds to combat dandruff. It has terpenoids, such as terpinen-4-ol, viridiflorol, eucalpyptol, nerolidol, and cineole, which are responsible for its antimicrobial properties. It works together with Rosemary ct. Verbenone to help clear out dead cells for healthier cell renewal.
Jojoba and Peach Kernel: Great for moisturizing sensitive scalps.
Botanical Keratin: Hair nutrient deficiencies can sometimes stem from lack of keratin, which this natural ingredient generously replenishes.
I paired it with the Tea Tree Oil conditioner (even though this conditioner has a partner Tea Tree Oil shampoo).
My Experience: Both the shampoo and conditioner have traditional consistencies. They do have strong medicinal smells, but that doesn’t bother me. In fact, it really makes me feel like it’s doing its job! Only after a couple uses, I noticed the itching stopped, which was a relief. Although this didn’t completely rid my scalp of flakes, it reduced my flakes by at least 75% and my scalp’s health looks great overall. I would say this is the most powerful duo, and perfect to use during the heart of winter when dandruff is at it’s worst.
🗑 Disposal: Both the shampoo and conditioner bottles are #1 PETE and can be recycled after rinsing out thoroughly.

At The Wonder Seed, they draw upon more than 25 years of experience to formulate products with the optimal blend of virgin organic hemp seed oil. The hemp seed oil is truly super food for your scalp and may even help issues like dry, itchy or flakey scalp, Eczema and Psoriasis. The formula is gentle so it is ideal for children and infants.
Hemp Seed Oil The most nutritious oil on Earth. It is jam packed with Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D, & E and minerals including Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, & Zinc. It also has all 10 amino acids humans need and Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. This nutrition can lead to anti-aging, reducing inflammation, combating free radicals, balancing oily skin, and soothing the dry, itchy scalp. The Wonder Seed’s hemp seed oil comes from plants that are grown organically and are a completely sustainable crop. Their virgin organic hemp seed oil is drawn by cold pressing the highest-grade hemp seeds for the purest quality.
I use the Revitalizing Hemp Shampoo in conjunction with it’s partner, the Moisturizing Hemp Conditioner.
My Experience: I really love the aroma and suds power of this shampoo. It doesn’t quite hold up to the caliber of Maple Holistics for me during extremely dry periods, but it’s a good choice when you’re in need of a dry scalp remedy and want beautiful smelling hair. I have read stories of this product curing skin diseases like scalp psoriases. After using this, my dandruff was kept at bay and easy to manage. I was really impressed at how sudsy the shampoo became. It only takes a small amount to suds all of your hair (and I am someone who has super long, thick locks), making this product last longer. Both the shampoo and conditioner have a beautiful, pleasant aroma, leaving hair smelling fragrant. Even if you don’t have a dry scalp, I recommend this as a clean shampoo and conditioner swap!
🗑 Disposal: The Shampoo bottle is a #2 HDPE and can be rinsed out thoroughly and recycled. The conditioner bottle comes in a #4, which more and more recycling agencies are accepting, but contact your local waste company prior to disposal to be sure. Do not put #4 LDPE plastic into a recycling bin unless you are sure it is accepted. Otherwise, you could contaminate an entire batch of recycled plastic.
These anti-dandruff shampoos are so good even Sampson is interested! 🐶
